Balijatra is a fair that is not only awaited by Cuttackiyas but also by food lovers. It serves an array of drool-worthy and budget-friendly delicacies to titillate the taste buds of foodies of all age groups. A person carrying Rs 500 can have a tummy-full of savouries in Balijatra and still have money left in the wallet!
Here’s a list of must-have dishes in Balijatra :
Thunka Puri:
It grabs the attention of many passersby due to its enormous size and fancy
It’s considered a crime if you don’t have it once during the 7-day fair! One can find Thunka Puri only at Balijatra, leaving people craving for it throughout the year. Traditionally, Cuttackiyas love to have it as breakfast after Kartika Purnima Danga Bhasani (the day which marks the commencement of Balijatra).

It is usually accompanied by Chenna tarkari (home-made Paneer curry) or aloo masala bhaja (stir-fried potato).

Dahibara:
Cuttack and Dahibara are inseparable and no fair in the city is complete without the dish. There are innumerable outlets at Balijatra serving Dahibara, the best one being Trinatha Dahibara stall behind Gadgadia Temple, upper Balijatra ground. The place is chock-a-block during the evening. So better grab your plate before the sun goes down!
Lembu Paani:
After all the strolling and hogging, the best desi quencher at Balijatra is lembu pani, which is easily available at every 100 metre at the fair ground and served with a good amount of Jal jeera!
Chaat:
The chaat in Cuttack has always been unmissable. Be it papdi chaat, kachori chaat or Dahi Chaat, Cuttack has always been a paradise of this delicacy. One can find many chaat stalls in Balijatra but the tastiest and the most hygienic of them all is the good old Kaalia Chaat!

For the first time ever, Balijatra has brought all of us a little closer to Puri by serving authentic Puri khaja for visitors. Fresh and crispy, they are everyone’s favourite. The objective behind introducing Puri khaja to Balijatra is to make the delicacy available to people who are not able to visit Puri frequently.
Gua Ghee Cha of Munna Bhai:
While taking a walk on Balijatra grounds, we came across a tea stall that was overcrowded and had a unique name ‘Gua Ghee Cha’. The distinct aroma of Gua ghee spread all over the place as a whopping 5,000 litres of Gua ghee cha was being prepared at a time. A unique and tasty concept indeed!
Aachar and papad:
Balijatra is a one-stop destination for different sorts of Aachar (pickles), starting from Berhampur famous Aachar and papad to Rajasthan’s renowned mango pickle. You can find it all.

After the month-long austerity, one cannot take off eyes from the beautiful line-up of non-vegetarian pakodas, which includes whole fish, prawns, eggs, crabs and chicken (YES ! You get all of these at one place!)

Banarasi Paan:
It is considered as the after-food traditional treat and available at Balijatra in plenty. Having it once in a while would not cause any harm but make sure not to spit it out in the open. Use the spittoons instead!
